ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
"Chin Chai" is a joint exhibition by artists Sharon Chin and Lydia
Chai. They met in art school and became friends. Now Sharon lives in
Kuala Lumpur while Lydia lives in Auckland. In an ambitious series of
drawings, installation and video, they explore ideas of distance and
friendship in relation to artistic collaboration. "Chin Chai" is the
invented landscape of two very different artists living far apart,
engaged in conversation with each other and the world around them.

There will be a screening of Werner Herzog's "Mein liebster Feind" (My
Best Fiend), followed by a discussion of the film and the exhibition
on Saturday 9 August, 3pm.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Sharon Chin was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1980. Working with text and
sculpture especially in site-specific installations, her work looks at
how we negotiate geography, history, human relations and language in
the contemporary imagination. Recent solo exhibitions include Fourth
World at the Australian High Commission (2006) and SENSORS: Banned
Books and Other Monsters (2007) at Central Market Annexe. She is the
recipient of the Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund grant, the Australian High
Commission Visual Arts Residency and is currently artist-in-residence
at Malihom Artist Residency in Penang . She also writes regularly on
art.

Lydia Chai grew up in Petaling Jaya and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts
from Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, New Zealand, where she is

paintings to socially interactive projects. These works are based on
the form and idea of roots and footnotes, their rhizomic qualities,
while extending the metaphor to relations between people. She recently

But anyway, I'm happy to say that things in my state (Selangor!!! Gambate MB Khalid!!!) are going on pretty well albeit us only nearing our 100th day of the Pakatan Rakyat ruling. Highlights besides the exposé of multimillion white elephants and the tree-chopping spree of the previous gohmen - The first 20 cubic meters of water per month is free to all residents of Selangor - please don't go wasting precious water though. I've also seen first hand this ADUN working tirelessly for her people - amazing. And well, this is just the beginning. I'm definitely looking forward to more synergistic (che wah...bombastiknya bahasa ini) cooperations between the rakyat and the state gohmen which would spell the good times for the state.

Meanwhile, people, please do not expect goodies or whatever bribes you think you deserve. The government is only as good as its peeople - so, roll up your sleeves and get to work!

In uni, my work group comprise of gals of different colour, creed and religion. We don't have a issue being of different colour, creed and religion. It is YOU - Mr. Minister - and your fellow colleagues who seem to want to split us into bangsa Melayu, India, Cina dan Lain-lain - WTF?! - when we all just need ONE identity - BANGSA MALAYSIA.

Earlier, he held dialogues with youth department officers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) at the youth skills institute here.

Ismail said the ministry would now be “result-orientated” with a specific goal of restoring confidence among the young in the Government.

This would include the ministry setting up its own blog as well as channelling funds directly to all youth associations, including youth-based NGOs in the country.

“We have decided to reduce bureaucracy. From now on, all funding for youth NGOs and associations will come directly from the ministry.

“We would ensure the grassroots have funds to conduct activities for youths,” he said.

pftt...When I was working in a youth NGO, not many from the government wants to take us seriously. People thought we were dreamers with lofty ideals which were not quite worth investing in. That was just a couple of years back before 8 March 2008. Now? Suddenly they want to pour money in? Why wait until now ah? To win our votes again? Wait...this sounds suspiciously like money politics :p

Character-building programmes that instil patriotism are also needed to shore up support among youths, Ismail said.

How to Talk to Strangers – A strategy

Sit facing each other on two chairs. Listen to each other's heartbeats through stethoscopes as you imagine the conversation you are having. Do not say a word, although you may find yourself smiling or frowning involuntarily. Make sure to maintain eye contact.

This is a strategy proposed for any social, political or cultural situation. In a public setting, conversations between two strangers may be broadcast through speakers. But the important thing is that everyone listens.

This project will be presented as part of The Independence Project at Galeri Petronas, an exhibition that brings together in partnership 22 curators, artists and arts managers from both Australia and Malaysia. Exhibition opens on 12 Dec 2007 (5:30pm onwards) and continues until 1 Feb 2008.

SENSORS is an exhibition that takes banned texts in Malaysia as a motif. Two interactive installations explore censorship as a paradoxical and complex process.

This project is generously supported by a grant from the Krishen Jit Astro Fund.

Sharon Chin (b. 1980) graduated from Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne in 2003. Her work looks at how we negotiate geography, history, human relations and language in the contemporary imagination. Her recent solo exhibition "Fourth World" was held at the Australian High Commission, KL, in 2006. She writes regularly on art for Off The Edge, Kakiseni and The Star, and is the recipient of this year's Australian High Commission Visual Arts Residency.
